Note: Various other Gouda tulips are mentioned in the manuscript catalogs and literature on Tulipmania. Mike Dash (see bibliography) mentions a Generael der Generaelen de Gouda, and states it was frequently just called Gouda.
The tulip grower and breeder, Henrik Pottebacker, who developed the initial broken "Rose" tulips was from Gouda.
Gouda is a city in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. Experiencing economic problems during the last years of the 16th and the first of the 17th century, it additionally suffered from severe plague outbreaks in 1574, 1625 and 1636 (the year tulipmania began reaching its zenith). And yet, many residents had pride in their city. Naming beautiful tulips in tribute to the city was one way to show that pride. Gouda cheese takes its name from this city, around which the cheese continues to be produced.
